For the last 75 years, our worldwide alliances and "leader of the free world" status have prevented attacks on America's homeland. Time will tell if the world now sees attacking America at home in a different light.
I don't quite see how you are connecting these dots. Yeah, the world and technology is evolving. Oceans don't provide the same separation and protection they used to. That' is why we need secure borders.
