I finally broke down and ordered an Apple Watch with cellular capability, sharing my iPhone's cell number.

What apps do you folks use and recommend? Not just aviation: any apps that you like for find helpful?

Thanks! :)

Watching this thread with interest... I nearly bought one last week when Prime Day had sales. Costco has the same deal and I think it's still going on, at least through the end of the day. Friends who have Apple watches tend to use them for step counting (a la Fitbit), reading and responding to text messages, and some phone calls (though folks will switch to their phone at some point for better call quality). At least those were the things I observed them doing. I'll have to ask them what else they find useful. All those things I can do with my phone, but I do agree it's sometimes a pain to carry the phone around.

Wallet. I pay for purchases almost exclusively with my watch. Apple music, I can use my watch to monitor heart rate, and listen to Talking Heads at the gym. And if I get a text or phone call, i can answer. It basically doubles as phone when i do not want to carry/use phone. You can get airport info on favorite airports including weather on Foreflight. And use as dive watch. Many of these you need Airpods, but who has an Ipad, Iphone, Apple Watch, and no Airpods? No sane person I know... ;)

The function I use the most on my watch is the flashlight, since my hangar is quite dark at night. It offers plenty of light to get to the bathroom and is easily accessed with the action button on the Watch Ultra. I like the altimeter app and Stationweather among avapps, with Goose trending. Carrot is my fave Watch wx app.

BananAppeal uses the app that warms her coffee.

If I owned anything they could control, I'd probably use one of the remote control apps like MyQ. Check out Foreflight's limited functions too.

I think that the best option for buying any Apple Watch is to buy a refurbished one directly from Apple. You can find their refurbished products under "Store" on their site.

I wish you had said this a week ago. I have had a rental car for the last week, and kept forgetting to take my phone out so sat in my driveway futzin around to get phone out and getting the app open. Just setup my watch...cool!

I started to say "Me" (no airpods).
But I have hearing aids that let me stream almost any bluetooth device directly to my hearing aids.

I have an iPhone (and an early iPad that doesn't upgrade anymore) and no Airpods. Am I insane? That's TBD, but I have weird ear canals so most in-the-ear headphones don't stay in and don't feel comfortable to me.

The feature on my watch I use most is its ability to find my phone, which I have left in the bedroom in the hangar, buried on my desk, or set down in the yard. A couple of times I invoked the phone-finder (which is not an app; it’s something built into the watch). I heard the chime from the phone but couldn’t locate where the sound was coming from, though it had to be nearby. Turns out the phone was in the back pocket of my jeans, which I was wearing at the time.

Which Apple watch do you have?
None, yet. I'm mulling over whether it makes sense to purchase one (and if so, which one). If I have to use AirPods, I'm less interested in getting the watch at this time, until the AirPods feel better in my ears.

I guess that's the modern-day equivalent of looking for your glasses, which are perched on top of your head. I may have done that once or twice...

You don't need AirPods, don't let that determine which watch you get. I have an iPhone, iPad and iWatch SE, but don't own AirPods. That style didn't stay in when I was an active runner, so never bought them, and have enough wireless phones that I'm not planning to buy any at this time.

You do not have to use Airpods, but as a phone substitute they are advantageous. I have answered my phone on watch without them, similar to using speaker mode on phone.

I have an iWatch 8 and will hand it down to our daughter this fall when the iWatch 10 comes out, contemplating getting the Ultra. I quit wearing a watch when I retired but when the 8 came out with its 911 feature I bought the cellular version and like it. I like being able to leave the phone behind sometimes, it makes me feel like Dick Tracy. The watch has great quality audio when used as a phone. The battery has to be charged daily which negates some of its usefulness. I have Airpod Pro but don't like the fit or the short battery life.

The Ultra models go up to three days on a charge, are bigger, brighter and tougher, include the action button, offer the unique "Wayfinder" face (which can include up to 8 complications), and cost $200 to $400 more than the standard model, though a refurbished model can save you $120. I much prefer the Ultra. The Ultras even have their own Facebook page, where users argue whether getting a seven-dollar band from eBay is acceptable or whether you need an official but seemingly identical, Apple-branded band for up to $350.

Pilots should know how to contact emergency services with their Apple watches:

BTW, the "side button" is the flush button on the same side as the protruding digital crown button.

I can see that in my future! :D

Yeah, I forgot< I got the ultra. Not having to charge every night is nice.
