What's new

If you could have just one watch?

I hesitated a long time before buying an Apple Watch. I had two concerns:

(1) It was big and relatively heavy. In the past, I've generally chosen smaller, lighter watches.
(2) After deciding to effectively retire, I'd stopped wearing watches altogether.

Now, a year and a half later, I wear it all the time, and I like it. It would be nice if it didn't need to have the battery charged each day, but that only takes a short time on a good charger.

When I bought it, I set something like five different faces for five different situations. One was a simple, traditional watch face. Another was for flying. Another was for working out. I don't remember what the last one was intended for, but as it turns out, I only use my default watch face. It works for me.

It's the charging aspect that has be concerned. In the distant past when I wore watches, I kept it on all the time and changed batteries every few years.

I originally thought I'd let it charge overnight, but I prefer wearing it overnight because it provides info about my sleep to my iPhone's health app. That information is useful.

So, instead, I just put it on a charger in the morning while I'm doing things like reading The Pilot's Place updates. :D

I don't have a fancy charger; I just use the one that came with the watch. It usually takes a half-hour or so to fully charge the battery. Also -- and I don't have any data to back this up -- but it seems to charge faster than it used to. Perhaps one of the updates improved that.

From the movie The Skulls, I really like the Breitling Navitimer but the Rolex Submariner has been a favorite for a long time.

That wouldn’t happen if someone came up to me

My most recent watch - a Garmin 235 - just died after being submerged. I’ve had it since 2018. I’ve taken it apart, and it’s dry and working again. A new battery and screen with the adhesive to reseal it will be about $42. Will probably refurbish it myself.

But I’m wearing an old Garmin 645 my wife never used. So like new but probably 7 years old. It’s fine. But all I needed was that 235
