What's new

PIREP - 2025 Annual & JPI Engine Monitor Findings

I got a reply from Tech Support at JPI earlier today and the guy I've been working with agreed with our diagnosis: it's the probes, not the head! Now I'm waiting to find out if JPI will 'own' the issue or make me buy all new ones (that's about a $1200 penalty). I've been working with the same people there for nearly 2 years and it's up to the boss to decide. I expect to get word tomorrow what our go-forward plan is.

JPI has really come through. They are sending me 3 EGT probes and 2 CHT probes free of charge! That exceeded my expectations by far. The only ask is that I ship the defective probes back at my expense, which is well worth it. They bench tested them before shipping, but probably won't arrive in time to let us swap them this weekend. WX is looking good enough to fly regardless.

Just a quick update: The probes are in hand and the WX has improved. It's CAVU today and supposed to stay that way thru Sunday with temps on the rise. Saturday morning we'll meet up and swap them. If I still get probe failures, my last hope will likely be that it is the ignition switch causing some kind of electrical interference. After that, I don't know which direction we'll go.

It occurred to me that before we go to the trouble to get our planes out, preflight, and fly to our mechanic, it might be a good idea to verify the contents of the package from JPI. 3 EGTs and 2 different style of CHT is exactly right. Plus it's got all the terminals, nuts, stars, and screws. It's gonna take a few hours to swap them in and out but hopefully the end is in sight.

Hopefully I'll post good news this weekend!

Today was the day. I flew to our meet up point with new probes from JPI. The #2 EGT probe was disconnected prior to my last flight and with it disabled I got no probe failures during the 30 minute flight to my mechanic. After decowling, we R&R'd 3 of the EGT probes including #2. We could not get the CHT probe out of the #2 cylinder, so instead we tightened it down good and it was time to fly.

I took it up for 30 minutes and am happy to report I experienced zero probe or sensor failures, for the very first time in 2 years! It may be the #2 EGT probe all along was the culprit. We don't know enough about the design of this box to say whether that's true. But that's a beautiful sight to behold.

After a late lunch, I flew home for another 30 mins and again had no probe failures, so that's an hour of success...I'll take it.

Congratulations!!

One last update that I feel compelled to share. I still had the issue of returning the probes (both my old and some of the new ones) to JPI under an existing RMA. Last night I emailed the support staff I've been working with the successful results of last week's work replacing the probes, thanking them for having my back the entire time. I asked if I could hang on to the probes until after I fly it into annual on Sunday.

The reply I received: "YAY! That’s great news! We are so happy to hear that. You are more than welcome to keep those probes. We do not need them back. I hope things stay looking up from here on out!" From my perspective, JPI stood behind their product big time, a rarity these days. And I have spare probes should my or my buddy's probes fail in the future. That's a win!
