I have made many long cross country flights in the US, Canada and the Caribbean. Flight planning is part of the fun for me. I start with a routing that takes me places I want to go and see. Often the most direct, but sometimes it is fun to go out of the way. Do not be a slave to a straight line. I like to plan stops where gas is cheap (Foreflight or AIRNAV) with at least an hour reserve on landing. Get a good weather briefing at every stop for the next leg. The internet is you friend. for this.

After you have made the initial route take a look at what is around the area you are flying over and look for fun things to see and do along the way . Museums, interesting airports or cities, parks, tourist attractions etc. Going straight an direct all the time can get boring! Some of my best (most fun) stops have been unplanned reroute because of unexpected weather or just deciding to see something new.

Carry survival gear appropriate for the conditions and terrain you will be flying over. Life Vests and Life rafts over water, warm survival equipment in the winter or in the mountains, especially in the West. I carry GPS locating device and a portable radio. A cell phone that is on is a very good device for being tracked as well as communications if something goes wrong.

Totally agree — planning is a huge part of the experience, not just a safety requirement. The idea of not always sticking to the most direct route makes a lot of sense too, that’s where you actually get to enjoy the journey. Also, having backups for weather and fuel stops is what separates a smooth trip from a stressful one.
Carrying proper gear is another underrated point — people often focus on the flight itself but forget about “what if” scenarios.
