Cessnas, Pipers and other small airplanes — now the largest U.S. lead emitters — are on the verge of a historic shift to unleaded fuel.

Why it matters: Lead exposure has been linked to a host of health and developmental issues. Historic exposure to lead, mostly from car exhaust, lowered the IQ of about half the U.S. population, per one recent study.

It makes the point that unleaded fuel will benefit owners and pilots the most.
 
There have been STC’s around for unleaded “Auto Fuel” for quite awhile but the problem with that became the Fed Mandate for ethanol In most pump gasolines. There is Ethanol Free fuel available but it’s about the same cost as 100LL. I currently fly my experimental on ethanol free unleaded with an occasional tank of 100LL. Ironical when I use 100LL, I have to change my oil much more frequently. I just hope the new fuels perform as expected and roll out soon, this has been a topic for many years now.
 
Biden has signed a bill that gives $10 million to unleaded fuel "testing and evaluation," though it seems like it would be better spent to help provide resources to manufacture and deploy it.

That wasn't the problem. The bigger problem was that there are too many high compression engines that could not run on Mogas, ethanol or not. And no (hardly any) FBOs were going to store 2 separate types of Avgas.
 
Considering we can't get oil filters, the simplest and most prosaic of items, I don't think any of us should hold our breath. I would like to see it, though.
 
The BIG question is "How much will it cost us?" Santa Clara Count in CA banned 100LL so UL94 is the only option. Some airports have both and generally the cost is significantly higher for UL94. Nearby airports Bay Area airports with 100LL are also significantly less expensive.

No, I just found a random airport elsewhere with both UL94 and 100LL as another example. SGS is South St Paul, MN.
 
It's odd that there's no mention of G100UL in this. However, even when it is considered, the proposed effective date of the legislation seems hasty, given the unknowns in the rollout timeline.

When supply of UL fuels increase prices will drop. UL fuels are still low volume commodities, even compared to 100LL.
 
Every anti-airport group in WA state will support this insanity.
Of course, because it's for the children!
(Clearly not for the big developers willing to pay millions to develop the land that airports occupy.)
 
The anti-airport crowd are going to have to come up with a new reason to shut them down. And I suspect they will. . .

Around here it's all about noise. People are moving to Florida in droves and buying property without doing any research. Then they find that the reason they got a good price is because it is at the end of a runway and raise hell about the noise. Especially about any plans to upgrade the airport. They just managed to kill a planned extension to the runway that would have provided much more safety.

Any property near an airport is legally required to mention this in the title report or other relevant documentation. Legally, there should be no surprises.
