Does anyone have real world numbers for the Stoots Prime IO-370 195 HP engine upgrade?

Performance?

Top Speed?

Fuel Burn?

Climb?

https://stootsaviation.com/io-370-prime-engine

I am very interested in this upgrade, but I know it is expensive ($60k before install when quoted last year)

Thanks in advance

Good luck trying to get a straight answer. I've tried multiple times without success. They're on here someplace, but avoid questions. They send you to their website with minimal information.

Unfortunately - for us of those with the flat firewall early series aircraft, there is not much other choice. I would guess at least equal to, but maybe slightly better than an O-360 machine

I don't believe there are any other STC's in production. You have to try and piece one together or hound a non-interested STC holder.

It's expensive - but probably the easiest way to go.

I have a IO-370 on order from Stoots.

Here are the facts on increasing horsepower to an airframe originally certified with a lessor engine.

The performance increase is going to be in takeoff, climb, and go around capabilities. There might be a bit of cruise speed increase, but not much. The airframe has inherent drag, and it takes huge power increases to overcome that for significant cruise TAS increase.

The reason to add more ponies up front is to get off the ground quicker and to cruise altitude as soon as possible.

Fuel flow is determined by power settings. When lolly gagging around, set low power, low RPM and find out what long range cruise is!

Likewise, when going X-C, experiment and find the throttle and RPM settings for best NM per gal.

I chose the IO-370 because it is a new design, balanced, and the best option in my opinion.

When I get it, and fly it, will report my findings.

We also have a Stoots upgrade on order for our 172F. Besides the 45 extra horsepower beyond the O-300, it includes a constant-speed composite prop and fuel injection. It was supposed to be here last month but has been pushed back because TCM is backlogged on the TSIO-370, which is basically Continental's version of a Lycoming 360.

In airplane terms 45hp seems like a lot but I always here the speed increase is negligible. @Aeromot , not to give you homework but it would be wonderful if you took your bird as configured and ran some test runs so you could compare apples to apples against your Stoots upgrade when it finally happens. I have a 172G with a motor past TBO and engine choices are often on my mind.

That is already planned. I have a list of tests I want to do and found some apps that will help with measurements. The things I am most interested in are climb/takeoff performance and the CS prop, since I find constantly fiddling with the power controls when trying to get max cruise to be an annoyance. I don't mind losing the need for carb heat, either.

Of course, a significant attraction is having a comparatively modern engine that is supported by the factory, as opposed to the O-300 which is pretty well orphaned. The upside of that for me is that we have a O-300 that isn't even at TBO that should be attractive to someone who wants to replace or install one. To that end, Stoots occasionally sends emails about people in the area who are looking for O-300s.

What is your delivery time on Cont IO-370? Heard they are at least 9 months out now.
Tried to order full pkg through Stoots, made deposit, but then he changed his mind and sent it back couple weeks later. Some story about me changing his STC, which I had no intention of doing at all.. But he just would not even discuss it. Do not recommend him, just an odd duck.

I talked to Stoots today. He just got word from TCM that his 10th engine order is shipping as Continental starts building them at a second facility. We are No. 17, and he is hoping that they will now send him 3 engines a month. So maybe ours will be shipped late February or early March. We ordered it and sent him a deposit in early June.

any update on your TSIO-370?

Latest on our engine. We're No. 17 in his order book, and engine No. 13 is just going out. TCM in Mobile is apparently having trouble finding and keeping assembly mechanics so deliveries are apparently sporadic.

The good news is that the Hartzell composite prop and associate accessories (governor, etc.), which looked like it could hold things up, is now in the works and about ready to ship. We made the $16,500 payment for it today.

Long wait, looks like maybe near 11 months if it shows. Not sure one would go into a new one with that timing.
What was prop order/delivery timeframe?
Thanks.

The prop was ordered and paid for yesterday, and will ready to ship in a week or 10 days, but there is no rush until the engine is ready.

'Since we have a functional airplane, Continental's issues getting the engine built aren't keeping us from flying.

Wow, that is pretty quick delivery for the prop. I had heard Hartzell was backed up on the Trailblazer, but guess not now. Amazing delivery timeframe there. Unless Stoots had them already on order.

It sounds like we got lucky with the prop. It arrived right on schedule.

However, the current guesstimate on the engine is July, over a year after we placed our order. TCM seems quite backed up.
