What is the difference between these two flight activities?

Activity Number: A080103-01

APT-Instrument Proficiency Check

Is it just that one is all credit at the Basic level, and the other allows you to split it across Basic and Advanced?

Or is there some other distinction that I'm missing?

There are others too. Providers can create activities by combining various WINGS syllabuses. You will see a bit more about the activity if you are logged in than if you are not.

Basically, Activity Number: A080103-01 is your basic IPC. Notice that is only covers Topic 2. The other is a package from Aeronautical Proficiency Training LLC. There's not much guidance on this stuff, but my take is that these credits are available only though them. If your drill down into the syllabus, you see that it covers more than a a stared IPC, adding tasks from Topics 1 and 2 so that you have a complete WINGS phase completed.

Personally, I don't package it into a singe Activity or submit it to the program, but I do something similar. I have a combination of Activity Number:A080103-01 and two others that I use for a combined FR/IPC.

Thanks, that makes sense. I've recognized other providers, but that APT acronym in the course ID didn't jump out at me. I have no idea who Aeronautical Proficiency Training is.

I guess I messed up. I was looking at my Wings history, and back in November, I submitted the APT one to my instructor in error instead of the default FAA AO8103 one. We definitely covered the topics pre/post flight, so I'm not too worried about it. I'm generally diligent and not sure how I submitted the wrong one. I was probably in a rush and/or trying to navigate it on my phone.

If you don't mind sharing, I'd like to know what other activities you combine?

For me, I like the Flight Review (ALC-25) & IPC (ALC-38) courses. I try to review those annually.

A080103-01 Completion of IPC (Basic and Advanced Flight Topic 2; Knowledge Topic 2)

Not IPC-specific, but the FAA is starting to put together combination courses for flight reviews. IPCs, of course, follow the IPC Table in the instrument ACS, but Flight Review content remains discretionary for the CFI. And example is A130628-01, Advanced WINGS Flight Review. You need to log in to see the full requirements (stupid), but it combines three syllabuses which meet all three flight credits and includes three specific recommended courses, which the CFI is supposed to verify were actually done. It's an interesting combination of specific requirements coupled with some degree of CFI discretion. There's a little bit of "requires from Column and and then select and option from Columns B and C" involved.

My flight review was due at the end of this month. I was originally going to do a combo IPC/FR but when I saw this, I figured I'd give it a try. I had never done one of the courses before - Aeronautical Decision Making for VFR Pilots (ALC-62) - always do a course before recommending it. It was long but really quite good (despite all the FAA ADM mnemonics). Audio-Visual and even went into such things as personal minimums and the hazards presented by automation.

Note: The regulations do not require any ground training for an IPC, and there is no ground testing in any of the IPC-required Tasks from the IR ACS. If you come to me asking for an IPC and nothing else, there will be no ground work before we walk to the airplane other than the standard instructor/trainee brief for the profile to be flown.

Same here, although I'm not as strict as you about it limiting any discussion to only the plan of action. . It 's kind of hard to test knowledge and ADM/risk management elements of a task - which is required by the regulations - in silence.

Please note that I said "an IPC and nothing else." If that's all you want, that's all you get. But you can still test knowledge, ADM, and risk management during the flight without a dedicated ground portion -- nothing in the IPC says the flight portion of the check must be conducted in silence.

I know what you said. But the tasks do have a risk management and knowledge component. Much of that can be tested in flight but it sounded like you were actively avoiding it. Obviously, "nothing in the IPC says the flight portion of the check must be conducted in silence." And since the IPC table represents a minimum, a CFII can ask for more.
